About the Building Trades

The Indiana State Building & Construction Trades Council (informally known as the Building Trades) is an independent organization, affiliated with the Indiana AFL-CIO, representing over 75,000 working men and women in 15 construction unions.  The state council coordinates activities and provides resources to its affiliated construction trades unions, as well as Indiana's 14 local building and construction trades councils (BCTCs).  The state council is comprised of elected representatives from each of the 15 affiliated construction crafts.

The Indiana State Building & Construction Trades Council was chartered in 1961, through the national Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. The Indiana state council has helped its 120-plus affiliated building trades unions to make job sites safer, deliver apprenticeship and journey-level training, organize new workers, pass legislation that affects working families, and assist in the securing of improved wages, hours and working conditions through collective bargaining.
